Philadelphia Irish Bars & Pubs
|
|
After years of thorough fieldwork, researchers are getting closer to discovering what makes Philadelphia’s Irish bars so much better than other types of pubs. Maybe it’s the constant flow Guinness and Jameson or the Irish pub music. It could also be the meat pies and pub grub or the always laid-back atmosphere found in Philly’s Irish bars. Whatever it is, the important thing is that Irish bars are always enjoyable and Philly is full of them. McGillin’s Olde Ale House is Philadelphia’s oldest—it opened in 1860—and one of the city’s most popular. The Irish Pub, though aptly named, isn’t quite as authentic as McGillin’s. It does have an extensive menu though, and always plenty of Guinness and Harp. For those times when you’re craving a pint and some traditional Irish food, Philadelphia’s Irish bars won’t disappoint.

Fergie's Pub
1214 Sansom St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Tel. 215.928.8118
Step inside Fergie's Pub, possibly Philadelphia's most authentic Irish pub, and you'll immediately feel like you have been transported from Market East to Downtown Dublin. Traditional pub fare—Fergie's fish & chips and Shepard's pie—can be found on the menu, but juicy hamburgers, deluxe nachos and Fergie's famous Buffalo wings are also offered. This popular Irish bar is a great place to hear local music and readings during open mic nights. When there aren't any performances, Fergie's jukebox boasts a huge selection of Irish folk and rock tunes along with American bar favorites. Fergie's Pub is an excellent choice for something unique when exploring the Philly nightlife.

McGillin's Olde Ale House
1310 Drury St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Tel. 215.735.5562
McGillin's Olde Ale House is true to its name. This really is Philadelphia's oldest bar—it opened in 1860, the year Lincoln was elected president. Although old, really really old, McGillin's keeps up with the times and has new high def TVs for watching the Eagles all season long. Patrons may purchase a beer mug for $5, filled the first time for free, and for just $1 each time after that on Sundays. McGillin's Olde Ale House also has Texas Hold 'Em tournaments on Thursday nights and various special events throughout the year. This Philly bar has an awesome beer selection, including two McGillin's house beers brewed by Stoudt's.

The Irish Pub
1123 Walnut St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Tel. 215.925.3311
Where else in this great country can you get a plate of tacos at place called The Irish Pub? Ok, so this may not be the most authentic Irish pub in Philly, but it still delivers tasty pub grub and beer for cheap. College students flock to The Irish Pub for the excellent drink specials and extensive jukebox selection. Guinness and Harp flow all night long, but Irish beer isn't all that's offered. The usual selections are available, along with some local Philly microbrews. The Irish Pub has a menu much longer than most pubs and serves up everything from chili to veggie burgers to buttermilk ale fish & chips. Philadelphia's Irish Pub leaves out all the unnecessary frills and delivers what really matters: quality drinks and great food at low prices.
