Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Bars and Clubs
|
|
With New York City only a few hours away, Philadelphia often gets overlooked as a destination or home for lesbians and gay men. But for those who would trade the hustle and bustle of a larger city for the charm and grace of America's first city, Philadelphia provides an amiable and tolerant atmosphere for the LGBT community. Most bars and clubs are located within walking distance of each other, in the quaint streets east of Rittenhouse Square, most notably around the intersection of N. 12th and Locust Sts. Lesbians and gays interested in a more foliate neighborhood have been snapping up the stunning homes of the tony Chestnut Hill.

12th Air Command Headquarters for Men
254 S.12th St., Philadelphia, PA; Tel. 215.545.8088
This tri-level bar and club packs them in nightly with drink specials, drag shows and go-go boys. The drinks are big and the patrons bigger. It's not that it's a bear bar, but the mix of twentysomething dancers (who hang on the second story dance floor) and semi-professional gay men gives one hope that a bar can be integrated, age-wise. Also, if you are vigilant you can catch a stray lesbian. The remixes are nothing all that jarring or avante, but R&B and Soul are highlighted, along with various "hit" dance remixes.

700 Club
700 N. Second St., Philadelphia, PA 19123; Tel. 215.413.3181
This mixed gay/straight bar looks more like someone's house than a neighborhood-gentrifying rock club. The music is glam, but the emphasis is squarely on ROCK and gay and straight boys alike frolic amidst the mismatched Salvation Army sofas, the kitchy/classy wallpaper while a faux-hawked DJ spins Bowie-worthy dance hits.

Giovanni's Room
345 S. 12th St., Philadelphia PA; Tel. 215.923.2960
Speech was freed in Philadelphia and Giovanni's Room proudly lives up to that legacy as a bookstore filled with historical tomes, erotica and lots of lesbian and gay-interest publishing.

Millennium Coffee
212 S. 12th St., Philadelphia, PA; Tel. 215.731.9798
Boys pack this 12th St. scene where non-alcoholic queers crowd in to read the Times as if the act were performance art. Barrista specials are available just like in your local Starbucks, but no one blanches when you order "coffee, regular." A great place to meet prospective dates or take a lingering one for a late afternoon dessert. If Michelle N'dege Ocello isn't playing over the sound system, you should be shocked but grateful.

Pure Nightclub
1221 Saint James St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Tel. 215.735.5772
Pure is Philadelphia's premier gay nightclub in Washington Square West and offers dancing throughout its two enormous floors. With several bars throughout, specialty cocktails, beer and wine are always close by, but only members are allowed to make purchases. This makes Pure Nighclub have an incredibly open, social vibe. The main floor houses the huge main dance floor that is always action-packed with music spun by Philly's best DJs. Bottle service is available in plush booths surrounding the main dance floor—an excellent location for checking out the beautiful people of Philadelphia.

Shampoo
417 N. 8th St., Philadelphia, PA; Tel. 215.922.7500
Gay men flock to Shampoo -- referred mysteriously in Philadelphia-ese as Shampoo's -- every Friday night to cruise, drink and dance to the latest from Kylie Minogue and her ilk. Other nights offer a more mixed crowd and less vigorous dancing.

Sisters
1320 Chancellor St., Philadelphia, PA; Tel. 215.735.0735
Surprise! Sisters is a club for lesbian and bisexual women. In addition to a live DJ and generous dance space, Sisters has a sister (ha!) restaurant that serves continental fare to hungry ladies and their occasional pet male.

Tavern on Camac
243 Camac St., Philadelphia, PA; Tel. 215.545.0900
Another bi-level bar, catering to gay men and their aficianados of all persuasions. The bottom houses cabaret-class piano players singing Sondheim and Porter, though he (and it is always a he) takes requests. The top is a fantastic, if intimate dance floor where you are more likely to hear deep house than Ol' Man River.
